What can I say about wizzybug? Well, let's put it this way... wizzybug is the cutest thing to be created that has a purpose after the Henry hoover. It is such a brilliant scheme that gives children great opportunities of independence at such a young age.
We applied to the wizzybug scheme when Delilah was 3 years old. We had a lengthy conversation with our physio at the time, we understood at this point Delilah was never expected to walk and that the scheme maybe worth trying. As I was suffering with my anxiety at the time I unfortunately didn't get to travel to Somerset with Dan and Delilah to have the appointment with them but I found the initial emails, calls etc beforehand so comforting and supportive. They are such a wonderful team and Delilah thoroughly enjoyed her loan of the wizzybug, as you will see by the photos and video below.
Please remember all information given here is a guide, it is here as a starting block in the hopes you will feel empowered to start your own research and get ahead before reaching crisis point as many of us do.
Who is Wizzybug designed for?
Wizzybug is intended for pre-school children of minimum age 14 months and a maximum weight of 20 kg.
Wizzybug is designed for physically disabled children. This includes children living with cerebral palsy, spinal muscular atrophy, spina bifida or muscular dystrophy, as well as children with amputations or other conditions that affect their ability to walk.
How can Wizzybug Be used?
Wizzybug is an electrically powered wheelchair for indoor and outdoor use, with adult supervision.
Children use Wizzybugs at home and at pre-school, and in outdoor spaces such as parks, gardens and playgrounds.
Wizzybug can be used every day or just occasionally, but is not intended to be used all day, every day.
Who is Loan Scheme For?
There is often no NHS funding for powered mobility for children under 5, so we fundraise to make Wizzybugs available, FREE of charge, to children in the British Isles who could benefit from them.
Thanks to the generosity of our funders, we have been able to provide over 900 families with Wizzybugs since we started the loan scheme in 2011.
How does the Loan Scheme Work?
Through the scheme, a child can have a Wizzybug for as long as it is suitable (this is usually until they outgrow it). Whilst children have Wizzybugs, our occupational therapists keep in close contact with their families and are always available to give individual advice. When the loan has been completed, Wizzybug is returned to us so that we can refurbish it for another child.
